Preschool Shapes Lacing Activity – Bible Lesson (David and Goliath)

Description

This is a lesson plan and printable worksheets for a Noah’s Ark Flipbook / Mini Book / Notebooking Craft for Preschool / Kindergarten / First Grade. This is one of the lessons included in the full Preschool Bible Curriculum (growing bundle, to be completed soon).

It’s very easy for homeschool parents to overlook the necessary developmental stage of perfecting fine motor skills. Children must have the dexterity needed in their fingers to complete academic tasks required in kindergarten – holding a pencil and being able to trace letters and eventually write. In preschool, lacing cards are perfect for gaining small muscle control in preparation for more early learning. That is why we have lacing cards in the Preschool Bible Curriculum at TFHSM. This resource was created for ages 3-5.

It’s recommended that the parent prepare these cards. Print on heavy cardstock and cut out the shapes along the bold outer lines. Punch holes at the circles. You can use the black and white sheets if preferred and have your child color them. Lamination is also highly recommended for repeated use. Show your child an example of how to perform the lacing task (yarn or shoelaces work best). Attempt to show them a pattern to follow, but if they just want to have fun and not follow a pattern, that’s ok too.

How to Use:

1. Read aloud the story of David and Goliath from the Bible to your child while allowing him/her to look at, color, or lace the cards. Keeps little hands busy!
2. They can be a great tool for fidgety children during church services.
3. Place prepared lacing cards in a busy box or activity bin for entertainment as older children are completing quiet work.
4. Use the cards as flashcards to discuss shapes. Take the time to talk about the number of sides and the number of points on each shape.
5. Use completed cards as wall decorations and visual reminders of the shapes learned.

• 13 lacing cards in black and white (for the child to color)
• Bonus page: One scene for the child to search for shapes (distinguishing general shapes, not exact) and to draw on the scene the shapes he/she finds. The scene could also be used as a visual for talking about the character traits of David. A black and white copy is included as well and could serve as a coloring page while reading aloud the story of David and Goliath.
