Identify and close learning gaps in Math with A+ Interactive Math’s Adaptive Placement Tests and Lesson Plans!


With my history as a public school teacher, I do love a good test.  Now, wait – notice I said, “GOOD TEST.”  To me, a GOOD TEST is one that really does let me know where my child stands in regards to my goals for her learning.  A good test is one that is quick to complete, easy to administer, and gives accurate and helpful results that I can easily understand without having a Master’s degree (I do actually have one) or special training.  It is one that I can use from the convenience of my own home, and in my own timing.  It is adaptive to my child’s level of understanding.  A good test challenges her knowledge yet doesn’t push her beyond her frustration level.  Finally, such a test doesn’t intimidate her or cause her to feel stupid when she doesn’t know an answer.


Many homeschoolers live in a state that requires standardized testing.  I do – in North  Carolina we are required to have our child take standardized achievement test every year, and keep those records on file.  Personally, I don’t mind.  I like seeing Laynie’s growth from year to year, and I even had her tested the year before we were required by law to do so!  I did it so that my first year, I would have a record of how much she had learned since the year before.

But, I don’t test often throughout the year.  The curriculum we use does include paper tests periodically throughout her lessons, but I skip them.  I just don’t need them.  I assess Laynie’s understanding throughout the year, usually just by watching her learn.  I very rarely give her a written test.  I just know what she knows and doesn’t, from watching her.  However, I do sometimes wonder if there are gaps in her learning.  What do I mean by “gaps”?  I mean, things that I don’t realize that she doesn’t know yet.
